Meikle Tòir - The Original
Industry veteran Billy Walker and The GlenAllachie are pursuing an ambitious goal: to create a peated Speyside single malt that is second to none. Meikle Tòir (pronounced "Mee-kuhl Tor") is the name of the new brand: Gaelic for "big pursuit," it loosely translates to a great mission.
The independent distillery has been tinkering with this smoky style, rare for the whisky region, since 2018. It does so on a small scale: around 100,000 liters of peated raw spirit are distilled for just six weeks per calendar year. The barley malt is kilned over mainland peat from St. Fergus, which produces a sweeter smoke with oak tones than island peat. It is used in a moist state to maximize aromas and achieve a peat content of up to 71 ppm in the whisky (up to 95 ppm in the barley malt).
Meikle Tòir – The Original is the flagship of the range. Matured in bourbon and rye barrels and American virgin oak, it reaches 35 ppm and has a complex profile of baking spices, roasted honey, and sweet peat smoke.
