A 1998 Laphroaig small batch. A very special dram that felt like the correct choice for Whiskyland Chapter 10. This is composed of two 1998 refill barrels, which were married and re-racked into a 3rd fill European oak sherry hogshead for over two
years. The subtly different influences of three refill casks over 26 years of maturation has made for a beautifully intense, rounded, and deep whisky, one that remains totally dominated by Laphroaig distillate character: peat smoke, medicine,
seashore, and fruit.
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Deep, rounded, and muscular peat reek aromas. Peppery, tarry, full of iodine, seashore notes, TCP, bandages, and charred pineapple. Stunning distillate that has been very gently and beautifully rounded by refill wood.
Palate: Stunning intensity and power, yet with amazingly velvety and textural peat smoke, the perfect balance of dry smoke, with sweeter medicinal and peat flavours. Behind that comes fruits, green and exotic types, with beautiful coastal and mineral
inflections.
Finish: Very long, richly peaty, smoky, tarry and medicinal, pure Laphroaig character and power with hints of citrus fruits fading long into the aftertaste.
